SlopCheck: Privacy Policy

What SlopCheck does

SlopCheck is a browser extension that compares the references in a text selection you make with the bibliographic records held by Crossref. It only runs when you select text, right-click and choose "SlopCheck: verify selected references".

Data sent to third parties

When you run a scan, the extension sends the following to Crossref, a scholarly metadata service:

Requests include the contact address slopcheck@gmail.com, as Crossref asks API users to do. Like any web request, they also expose your IP address and browser details to Crossref and doi.org. Their handling of that data is governed by the Crossref privacy policy and the DOI Foundation privacy policy.

Nothing is sent to the developer of SlopCheck. The extension does not use analytics, advertising or tracking, and does not sell or share data.

Data stored on your device

The standard edition stores one record in your browser's local extension storage: the date and the number of scans you have run today, used to apply the daily limit. The Sleuth Edition stores nothing. Nothing is transmitted anywhere, and any stored record is removed when you uninstall the extension.

Page access

The extension reads the text you have selected, and the links inside that selection, on the page where you start a scan. It does not read or store any other page content, and does not run any analysis unless you start a scan.
